Bio:
Hailing from the forested mountians of Cascadia and the Punk-Bohemia known as Olympia; the music of June Madrona tells tales of madness, family secrets, desert car rides, and too many lovers. Since 2005 the band has traveled in various forms through out the US, Canada and Europe playing Festivals, Concert Halls, Train Stations, and Squats along the way. The songs are based off of Ross Cowman’s songwriting but the band has always operated as a collective; each member lending their own voice to the song’s final form. The band name comes from the summer habits of the madrona tree; which each year, sheds its skin for a new one.
Current Members Include: Ross Cowman, Danielle, Sean Carson, and Molly McDermott.
Past Members Include: Sarah Lankutis (Swift!), Onyx Dixon (Polka Dot Dot Dot), Christopher Francis (Christopher Francis and Son), Bobby-Joe Watson, and Micah Ellison (Secret Plan).
some press quotes…
“June Madrona sing modern day campfire songs. The crackle of the flames and the sweet smell of smores is nearly palpable …”
-Songs: Illinois
June Madrona have managed to create a document of emotion, a testament to intellect and perception. It’s divergent themes of ageing, of the youth to be found in all people, of the age to be found in the young, the wisdom to be found in the most everyday of situations are utterly singular, absolutely unique.
Rock Louder – London -
With bands such as Viva Voce or Gossip and record labels like K or Kill Rock Stars, Portland (sic. we are from Olympia!) is still the undisputed world capital for that certain kind of lo-fi, laid back, well read, busted up but delicious pop. Recorded in a backyard yurt, this first album by June Madrona is fairly typical of Portland, a town built in the country where the boundary between urban and rural are perhaps more vague than elsewhere. Because even though June Madrona’s music is resolutely acoustic and pastoral, the tension is never far behind, especially when it comes to the moving lyrics that bring the young American still a little closer to his obvious compadre Sufjan Stevens. This road might be long and ugly but what a view point, what a trip!
